I’m sure we’re all familiar with Kanye’s West criticism of Bush during the aftermath of Katrina. And if you are human and/or Black, you might have also experienced anger with the treatment and coverage of African Americans whom resided in New Orleans versus the privileged. Everything from the media reports to the Government’s leisurely response made me angry during that year. Their behavior was simply criminal and inhumane.
“Despite days of warning, the government made no effort to help its most vulnerable citizens. In the wake of the hurricane, it has exploited the disaster to hand over reconstruction to private corporations and to advance its plans for the militarization of civil society.”
And today, I still wonder, where are those who have been displaced, what has been done, and what else needs to be done?
Many of you are familiar with Spike Lee’s documentary When the Levees Broke. Well, there is a new documentary that has given audiences an intimate view of those who stayed during the Hurricane. It is a documentary called, Trouble in the Water.
I recommend you try and see it, if it is showcasing your area.
What’s the Reality…Kanye West said it best in the song titled Go Hard -- “imma tell you like george bush told me, fuck ya'll ni@@&s im out of here.”

Trouble the Water looks like a good documentary, i'm going to check it out. Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke was a great documentary...although it was sad as hell...
did I tell you i saw Spike Lee speak at UNC last summer...dude was great! He kept it 100%
My mother and I went to a screening of "Trouble the Water" last month in Chambana. The documentary itself was extremely powerful. If you haven't seen it yet, be prepared to shed more than a few tears. However, the atmosphere and demographic of the crowd was interesting and unexpected to say the least. We were the only African Americans in the theater and there was so much tension in the air when we walked in, it felt like we'd stumbled onto a secret clan rally. During the film, there was inappropriate laughter and the questions at the end of the screening revealed that many of the people in the crowd possessed a very superficial understanding of the issue. I couldn't help feeling that many of the people in attendance were trying to shed some sense of guilt and/or personal responsibility by viewing it. The filmmakers were good about emphasizing the fact that seeing the film isn't enough but I don't know that the crowd really "got it."
